My aunt always makes this special dish for me because I am vegetarian. This dish is a mixture of mung dal ( a yellow lentil) and rice. It is high in protein.
1 cup lentils, or 1 cup mung dal
1 onion chopped
2 oz. ginger root, thinly sliced
4 fresh garlic cloves, in halves
2 cinnamon sticks 2 inch long
3 cardamon pods
1 tea spoonful tumeric
2 bay leaves
1/4 cup oil
2 table spoonful butter
4 cups warm water
Salt to taste
Wash rice and lentils thoroughly. Put them in a pan. Add all ingredients. Bring to boil in high heat. Turn down heat to minimum. Keep lid on. Cook for 30 to 35 minutes.
