Maxime and Chris tested the food at Khanna Pena in, Berkeley

In my opinion the food was well prepared but too spicy for kids! I still enjoyed drinking my favorite drink, Mango Lassi. They were nice enough to let us see their clay oven. The restaurant used to be a liquor store. The restaurant is very old and does not look that good on the outside. But, on the inside it is simple and clean. The walls are black with historical pictures of nude men and women. The waiters were also dressed in black. Khanna Pena is a traditional and fancy restaurant.

Spices and pictures of grinders

My favorite spice is cinnamon. I love the smell. Did you know that you can use cinnamon in chicken and vegetable dishes? When you mix cumin, tumeric, cayenne pepper bay leave, cloves, garam masala, and cardamon you obtain a paste known as curry which is at the base of most Indian dishes.

Maxime's Family Recipe - Roso-Golla (Bengali)

3 liter 2% milk,1 liter butter milk, 3 cups sugar,10 cups water,6 cardamom pods lightly crushed

Boil milk.

When boiling furiously, add butter milk.

Milk will churn. Let it cool for an hour. Drain in cheese cloth or similarly using a suitable fine strainer. Drain all water out.

The residual "curd" is soft.
Add 3 tablespoons of flour. Now work with your palm on the curd to make a smooth dough. Make about 30 round balls, the size of a table-tennis balls, and use you palms to make these balls.

Make syrup in a large and deep pan with a tight lid, using 10 cups of water and 3 cups of sugar, and 6 cardamon pods. Let the syrup boil furiously for a couple of minutes and then drop the balls in the boiling syrup. Put the lid on and let it boil in high heat for 15 minutes. Turn down the heat to medium and let it simmer for 25 minutes. more.

Your Roso-Gollas are done. Leave it in the syrup a few hours before serving. You can also refrigerate and keep them for several weeks.

Maxime's Family Recipe - Khichuri

My aunt always makes this special dish for me because I am vegetarian. This dish is a mixture of mung dal ( a yellow lentil) and rice. It is high in protein.

2 cups rice, long grain white rice
1 cup lentils, or 1 cup mung dal
1 onion chopped
2 oz. ginger root, thinly sliced
4 fresh garlic cloves, in halves
2 cinnamon sticks 2 inch long
3 cardamon pods
1 tea spoonful tumeric
2 bay leaves
1/4 cup oil
2 table spoonful butter
4 cups warm water
Salt to taste

Wash rice and lentils thoroughly. Put them in a pan. Add all ingredients. Bring to boil in high heat. Turn down heat to minimum. Keep lid on. Cook for 30 to 35 minutes.

Mt. Everest Restaurant

Tyler and Maxime went to a Nepali and Indian restaurant and had:
Mango lassi, Matter Paneer, Garlic Naan, Naan, Kheer, Gulab Jamun, Poori, Rice, Rice Pudding, Chicken Tikka Masala, Samosa, and Channa Masala. I especially like Matter Paneer and Poori. Matter Paneer is green peas and home made cheese cooked in mildly spiced sauce the color of the sauce depends on the spicyness. The food tasted very good and spicy.

MT. Everest review

Me and mxmdwl went to Mt. Everest an witch is indian restaurant. I thought the food was very good and was not to spicy. Also it was not to loud and the settings were nice. Plus it had very nice service. I would rate it 5 out f 5 stars. Parking was not  hard to find and there was no wait to be seated. The decor is very calming and traditional. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to families and everyone else.

Family Cook Book

This is one of my family's cook book given to my parents when they got married. This cook book is the only thing my mom uses for cooking Indian food. There is a lot more Indian food in there than I can memorize. My favorite foods are the dal, lentils, and rice.

Fun loving north Indian kids

Check out this music video to see traditional clothing, native songs, and some great humorous music. This is very different from the music videos we watch.

North Indian food

I have always been interested in northern India. The capital is called New Delhi. There are many states that make up this part of the country. The geography is diverse because there are mountains, the Himalayas, and a large desert, the Thar Desert.
In this area people like to make a lot of curries with dried fruits and nuts. They prefer bread over rice. The breads are called naan and roti. Their favorite ingredients are chili's, saffron and milk products.
